Volunteer Opportunities

Home-Start volunteers can support local families in a number of ways, using their unique skills and experiences to help them cope. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and generally help out in one of the following roles.

Home-Visiting Volunteer

To be a Home-Start home visiting volunteer, you will need to:

  • Be a parent or have parenting experience (We will discuss this with you)
  • Undergo a criminal record check at enhanced level (DBS)
  • Attend our free volunteer preparation course with other new volunteers. This is normally 40 hours training over nine weeks and takes place before you begin supporting families. We cover a variety of topics to prepare you for this important role.
  • Be able to visit a family at home, once a week, for 2-3 hours  to support them
  • Understand that your support for families is completely confidential
  • Be able to commit to at least a twelve month period of support
  • Have a non-judgemental attitude and understand about the pressure of bringing up a family
  • Volunteers do not need any formal qualifications to support a family. You are fully trained and supported for as long you are helping a family.
